Money Can't Buy You...
...another interesting fact from the Midterms: three candidates spent over $50 million of their own personal money on their campaigns... and all three of them lost...
Hmmm... you seem to be implying that those folks tried to "buy themselves a seat". That cuts two ways however - it also shows the pervasiveness of money in the American system. If you're an outsider or a maverick trying to get elected, you almost need to be a millionaire to finance your own campaign... because the incumbents get massive warchests of money from their Party bosses, as well as from their lobbyist friends in the corporate playing field.
Look at Ned Lamont in Ct. He had to finance himself because the party leaders in DC decided to only ceremoniously endorse him as the candidate - there was a lot of wink-wink nudge-nudge support going on for Lieberman, who while he was decrying Ned's "millionaire" status, pumped more money into his campaign then Ned did because of his corporate and Republican friends.
What American needs is a publicly financed campaign - like Canada has.
Post election, post regime change, and hence job loss; here I am, a Canadian political refugee in DC. All ready to exchange my Hill Times for The Hill and my Liberal red for Democrat blue.
