The View from Down Under

Came across this interesting post on the Lib leadership race, by a progressive Australian Group blog... (Also interestingly enough, the blog, titled: Larvatus prodeo, has a section for posts that fit under the category "Blame Canada")

I am all for international blog cooperation! Wonder if there is a way to say, link progressive blog groups in Australia with - something like - Prog Blogs in Canada?

Hmm..

Beyond giving them our URL to our website at Prog Blog so they can learn more about what's going on up here, I'm not sure. You'd almost be better off having a message forum somewhere where people could discuss issues... then say a monster aggregate that might be a bit cumbersome.

Glad to see there's interest Down Under for Canadian politics however. I'd be willing to go out on a limb and say that Australians are more interested in what goes on in Canadian politics then Americans are.

Hilarious! Both of you!

Seriously though - Couldn't this australian blog be put on prog blog and then people could vote for their posts in the same way they do canadian blog posts? Maybe there could even be a seperate section on the right handside of the page that is for Blogs from Abroad - and you'd have direct feeds from prog blogs all over the world?

Oh and Scott, in answer to your more interest in Canada in Aus than the US - well, I think it's fair to say that it doesn't take much to beat the States' level of interest in Canada...

Well JJ, there's a rule we set up at Progressive Bloggers right from the beginning that above and beyond any social or political views an applying blogs had to our site, it must be either a Canadian-based blog, or run by a Canadian. (When the site was first being proposed, I was one insisting the name of our affiliation be called "Canadian Progressive Bloggers" to make that clear, but in the end it was decided having Progressive Bloggers with the red maple leaf logo at the end of the name would be sufficient for people to figure out who we were).

We've been firm with that rule since, and I don't think there'd be much chance of swaying any minds on that.

I DO like the Blogs from abroad idea, or maybe we could be even more specific and call it "Progressive Blogs From Abroad". I am flexible to having a section for them that has their links. I'm not as crazy about having a feed for them though - as we have 325 or so feeds now from Canada fighting to get seen. And you've probably noted our front page is pretty crowded with stuff on the site as it is.

There is a upgrade in process at our site happening.. I think writing Wayne to suggest at least a section of links for "Progressive Blogs From Abroad" is worthwhile in asking him to consider.

Thats just my opinion, JJ, on what I think the reaction will be among Wayne and the current moderators (and the hopefully soon-to-be moderators). I could be totally wrong however and they might like the whole concept of it all. I can certainly pass on the ideas to Wayne for you, or you can talk to me about it in more detail in email or Messenger.

Scott, would be grateful if you could raise the idea with Wayne. I totally get the Canadian only content - but I think that sharing prog ideas across borders can be really beneficial and thought -provoking.

Can try to make a more articulate convincing case if need required.

Hi Mark:

Welcome!

2ndly, this is the Progressive Bloggers site we're referring to, and I'm one of the moderators there.

3rdly, I'm uncertain exactly beyond what I've been replying to JJ in the thread here what form co-operation would ensue. If you have any suggestions, I'm all ears... and I can at least take something back to my administrator to see what he thinks.

Hiya folks, I'm the guy who wrote that post and created the tag for it.......just a device to catch everyone's attention. Which it did.

Just so you know I'm a former Canuck, now Australian (17 years), who tries to keep up with the going's on and post about it from time to time for an Australian audience.

I try to keep it simple, since we don't hear much about Canada here, except for those cute "Mountie gets his tongue stuck to a lampost in winter" or "Bear attacks Australian tourist in BC" media reports.

Heck, how does anyone explain the Quebec/ROC thing to anyone in four million words or less?

Anyway, if you do come across any others I may write in future, please feel free to drop into LP and fact check my arse.

Oh, and I'm really looking forward to a motion of non-confidence next year and seeing Dion as PM.

Hey Mark and Phil! Thanks for stopping by! And Phil - great to meet you - excellent post btw! And I commend your mission statement, i.e. spreading a little bit of intel about Canada down south (that's similar to what I am trying to do on this blog here)

As you can tell from my blog posting and comments, I am all for creating international progressive blog collaboration - in particular between Can and AUZ - think we have a lot in common...

I am working on the canadian progressive bloggers (www.progressivebloggers.ca) to see if we can work out a mechanisms of info sharing... Mark, I think Scott Tribe - one of the moderators of progressive bloggers - sent you an email to follow -up... but yes, any brainstorming ideas on CAN - AUZ prog blogs v welcome!
