What they are saying in DC: Quebec Election Analysis

Check out the Washington Post's take on the election here... kind of interesting...not to mention, I can't begin to express how thrilled I am that the elections actually even had some sort of resonance in these here parts....

Wow, international coverage IS exciting.

It’s a funny article, especially how it opens with:
“Voters in Quebec on Monday refused to endorse another campaign for independence from Canada for the French-speaking province.”

This seems to capture the view held by many non-Canadians: that everything in Quebec comes down to sovereignty. Contradicting it’s hook, the article later aknowledges:
“The polarization between sovereigntists and federalists that for so long shaped the Quebec landscape is no longer the defining feature of the province's politics”.

The BBC also has a story up on their website: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6495189.stm

Same slant, but better written!

I think Dumont is a separatist in disguise. He voted for the yes side in 1995, wants a Quebec Constution as a start.... I never did trust him.

I know... he's scary.. Jeffrey Simpson had a good article in the Globe today about this weird autonomy stuff that Dumont is on about... I think that because he was underestimated, he didn't get the vetting and scrutiny that political leaders usually get.. it will be interesting to see if anything comes out in the next couple of weeks.

I thought Gregg's comment was weird, and annoying:

"Eventually, there will be winning conditions".

Really? That's a foregone conclusion is it?

I don't see why that's necessarily true, and it seems strange to me that Gregg would make that statement.

Yeah, I thought that Gregg's quote was strange too...

Having grown up in the states, I'm always delighted when they notice Canada. Although the analysis is usually as sophisticated as a grilled cheese.

But is it me, or does Mario Dumont look like a crazed child molester in the pic the Post, um... posted?
